Research of an advance normally costs you 5000 koku. The costs are halved for the scholar personality.
The advances that are colored blue in the techtree are the advances that you receive at start.

- Muromachi-Jidai (1467)
- ninjutsu = allows recruitment of ninja & +20% effectiveness of your ninja
- bojutsu = allows recruitment of yari ashigaru & naginata ashigaru & naginata samurai
- kenjutsu = allows recruitment of nodachi samurai & hatamoto
- kyujutsu = allows recruitment of yumi ashigaru & yumi samurai
- gagaku = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- hanzei = allows collection of taxes
- shodo = -1000 koku cost for advances
- shinden = allows construction of level 1 & level 2 buildings
- chanoyu = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- ikebana = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- zazen = allows construction of temples
- hensojutsu = +10% effectiveness of your ninja, requires famous ninja ryu
- sojutsu = allows recruitment of nagayari ashigaru & nagayari samurai
- naginatajutsu = allows recruitment of nagamaki samurai, requires famous naginata dojo
- yabusame = allows recruitment of mawarishu, requires famous yabusame dojo
- buke = allows construction of level 3 buildings
- nembutsu = allows recruitment of sohei, requires famous temple

- intonjutsu = +5% effectiveness of your ninja
- iajutsu = allows recruitment of kensei, requires famous katana dojo
- dengaku = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- sekisho = -10% effectiveness enemy kunoichi & ninja
- shoin = +1 defense of fortifications
- byobu = -10% effectiveness enemy kunoichi & ninja
- chabana = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi

- shurikenjutsu = allows recruitment of kunoichi, requires flower town
- kayakujutsu = +5% effectiveness of your ninja

- sukiya = allows construction of brewery
- renga = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- Nanban-Jidai (1543)
- hojutsu = allows recruitment of teppou ashigaru & construction of gunmakers guild, requires contact with portuguese through port
- battojutsu = +1 hitpoint for katana wielding units
- rakuza = +300 koku income from ricebroker
- nawabari = allows construction of fortress
- Azuchi-Jidai (1568)
- shuinsen = +1500 koku income from fishing wharf
- kusemai = 1 extra experience point for newly recruited kunoichi
- kenchi = +10% overall income
- katanagari = -10% effectiveness enemy kunoichi & ninja
- haiga = +5% effectiveness of your kunoichi
- jojutsu = +2 hitpoint for yamabushi
Regional Advances
Most advances can be studied, but some advances like shurikenjutsu and iajutsu for example can only be received if you own a district that has a famous dojo, or famous temple and so on.
Eras
Not all advances can be researched or received at the same time. Aside from the fact that you have to follow the arrows (i.e. a second advance can only be researched until all the prior advances have been learned), you also have to wait until the start year of that era, before any advances can be researched of that era.
