The land on the map of the game is divided into 1031 grids. These grids are the regions or districts in the game and are also known as kori. You can build one town on each district that you own. Districts vary according to terrain and climate.

Some towns can have harbours or ports. Harbours or ports can only be constructed where the terrain of a district is a beach.
There are 35 harbours in Japan.
Some towns can have guilds. Mountains with deposits like iron sand, copper, silver or gold can have guilds.

Climate affects the weather in the game and weather in turn may affect battles.
A wet season means that rains are frequent in that climate zone. Rain and snow negatively affects the strength of missile units.

Typhoons only occur in the summer or autumn season.
There are 4 districts in the game where you can construct a palace in your town. These districts are: Nihonmatsu, Kamakura, Kyoto and Dazaifu. The construction of a palace may entitle you to certain bonuses.
The presence of a famous dojo, famous ryu, or flower town in a district makes available certain scientific advances. These advances in turn allow you to recruit certain military units and covert units.
The following list shows what famous dojo, famous ryu, flower town, famous temple, or famous shrine makes what scientific advance available. Certain buildings have to be constructed in the town for the advance to become available to you.

There are a few schools, that teach special advances.
The Kusemai advance can only be obtained in the flower towns with a famous dancing school, such as the flower towns of Nara and Kyoto. This advance does not come available until the year 1568. This advance gives an extra experience point to newly recruited kunoichi.
The Chikujojutsu advance can only be obtained at the shrines of Daizen-ji, Chibuya, Ashigara and Tenjin, which can be found in the east of Japan. This advance does not come available until the year 1477. This advance lowers the construction cost of castles and fortresses by 500 koku and shortens the building duration by 4 seasons.
The Shodo advance can only be obtained at certain famous temples with an a famous school of calligraphy. Most of these schools can be found near Kyoto, Nara, and Kamakura. This advance lowers the cost of learning advances by 1000 koku.
